The Three Doors We Have Now
1. The Emergency Room
The ER is built for heart attacks, car wrecks, and trauma. When someone in acute intoxication is brought there, they wait in crowded hallways for hours while staff focus on true medical emergencies. The visit is extremely expensive, and when they are discharged, nothing about their addiction or housing has changed.
2. The Jail
Jail is not designed to safely monitor intoxication. Nationally, intoxication is a leading cause of death in custody. People are often booked, held briefly, and then released with a citation. There is no real treatment, no long-term plan, and no safe bridge to recovery. This door also leads back to the same sidewalk.
3. The Sidewalk
Most of the time, there is no transport, no open bed, and no capacity anywhere else. So nothing happens at all, or the person is simply moved along to another corner, another block, another off‑ramp. The crisis continues in public view, and the cycle repeats. Without somewhere to go, there is no real opportunity for that cycle to end.

For decades, there was never a fourth door—a place built specifically for people in acute intoxication. Every option pushed them back to the same street, the same camp, the same pattern.

From Jonah’s Place, every guest is connected to a real next step—detox, residential treatment, outpatient care, housing, or care management—so the encounter becomes the beginning of a new story, not just another spin through the same three doors.
